Videogames for the Blind

“What would it be like to play a videogame as a blind person?”

That’s a question you could answer quite easily by closing your eyes and having a crack at playing one. Or, if you’re afraid of the dark and thus can’t close your eyes for very long, you could just try playing ‘In the Pit’ instead.

It’s described as an “audio-only” stealth action game in which you control a horrible monster who lives at the bottom of a dark pit and eats the people who fall in. Sounds like a hoot!

Unsure what an “audio-only” stealth action game would entail? The video explains it better than I ever could.

<a href="http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-US&#038;playlist=videoByUuids:uuids:df61044d-75aa-4605-877b-7797abc6a58c&#038;showPlaylist=true&#038;from=msnvideo" target="_new" title="Trailer for &quot;In the Pit&quot; for Dream Build Play 2008">Video: Trailer for &quot;In the Pit&quot; for Dream Build Play 2008</a>

Obviously, it’s one of those pitch black pits without lighting (not even soft mood lighting). Either that, or a clever excuse for the developer’s ineptitude at artwork. The game will be one of the NXE Community Games launch titles on the 360.

Mirror’s Edge. In 2D!

Mirror’s Edge comes out tomorrow (or today, if you’re reading this tomorrow) which should be nice. God knows when we’re expected to play it, though. There’s far too many good games knocking about in the charts at the moment.

If you don’t share the same predicament and would like me to tell you about another game; a flash based 2D version of Mirror’s Edge, then you’re in luck my friend. It just so happens that a chap called Brad Borne has teamed up with EA (possibly in the same way the Power Rangers teamed up to create a Megazord, though this hasn’t been confirmed yet) to create just that. You can find a beta release of the game by clicking here and letting the magic of the internet do its thing.

It’s only a one level beta but it’s a lot of fun. It’s also great for those who can’t wait for the game to be released tomorrow and are reading this post today (as opposed to tomorrow).

Crayon Physics makes me feel like Penny Crayon*

If you haven’t already heard of Crayon Physics, then I can only assume that you’re either stupid or don’t like videogames. If it’s the latter, then may I suggest you’re in the wrong place. Maybe you took a wrong turning at Google? If it’s the former, don’t worry - we’re all stupid here.

Crayon Physics was originally a experimental prototype game developed by Kloonigames in under 10 days, but having proved so popular on the internets and winning Grand Prize at the Independent Games Festival, has now been made into a fully fledged game.

Crayon Physics Deluxe, as it’s now known, has an official website and is taking pre-orders. Pre-ordering will get you the game for $14.95, saving you a whole $5 dollars off the full price, which itself is only $20. It’ll also give you access to a beta version once that’s released. Having played the original game, I’d say it’s more than likely to be well worth $20.

Go have a butchers for yourself at the prototype and I think you’ll agree. If you don’t, I’ll eat your hat; whether you want me to or not.

Judgement Force!

Newzville!

Judgement Force sounds excessively manly, doesn’t it? If Gears of War was made a decade ago it would probably have been called Judgement Force.

But that’s not what I’m here to relay to you. Hidden Palace recently released a prototype of the game called Judgement Force for the Saturn, which was originally going to be Streets of Rage 3D, and eventually became Fighting Force. Remember that?

Anyways, this is a Saturn prototype, from before it was Fighting Force, which meant it never saw official release and is “uber rare”. You’ll need an emulator or a fancy modded Saturn to play it, and I’m sure if you’re up for that kind of hassle you’ll enjoy this vigorously.

You can download it here, luckily.

Pretty much everything you can already download of the Virtual Console, then, but for cheaper (I can’t imagine how many billions of pounds Nintendo would charge for this lot). Still can’t find anything regarding the arcade stuff, but it’ll have to be something special to make this package sound exciting now. I’m hoping this will be a £20 job.

I know it’s all first party stuff, but I’m still disappointed it doesn’t have ToeJam & Earl. :(

SEGA Flog a Dead Horse, and I love it.

Newzville!

Flog a Dead Horse is not the title of a new SEGA game, however interesting (or not), that sounds.

Instead of a new game, SEGA are putting loads of old games onto a disc, and then selling said disc to us, for money. Recently they have been doing this without discs, you may recall.

SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is a set of 40 games, presumably from the Mega Drive, including:

Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 and 3, Columns, Alien Storm, Ecco the Dolphin, Space Harrier, and Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3.

I think we can assume Ristar, Comix Zone, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Shinobi and all those other ones that are already out as downloadable whatsits will be on there too.

Hopefully there will be other more obscure titles, but I dunno, we’ll see.

The game(s) are coming out for the 360 and PS3, which is pretty snazzy. I prefer it delivered this way than as downloadables, mostly because it’s cheaper, and may possibly contain extras, like that Mega Drive Collection that was on the PS2/PSP. Still, there’s only so many times I can buy Sonic 1 and still be happy about it. I’m nearing my limit.

I hope after this SEGA get the MD out of their system for a bit, it would be great if they’d bring out a SEGA Arcade Classics* pack or Saturn Collection or something like that.

Then again, you could forget all this Mega Drive Collection shit and just emulate the lot for free, especially if you already have the frigging cartridges in your wardrobe - It’s not even illegal then (as far as I know).

But SEGA do need all the money they can get, and I’d rather give them money for good old games than shit new ones.

It’s out early 2009, and will be in 720p and all that bollocks.

*UPDATE: I just re-read the press release, and apparently the disc will contain Master System and 80s arcade games too. I hope they stray into the arcade 90s and do Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder!

Audiosurf on Steam for cheap.

Newzville!

To celebrate something or other, Audiosurf on Steam is a blindingly cheap $2.49, 75% off the usual $9.99 for the rest of this week.

Personally I am shocked, $2.49 is practically a shilling in real, British money. It’s like buying a game in Victorian times, when they didn’t exist, for cheap, except it’s now!

I’m assured Audiosurf is ace, so you should go buy it right now. I’m not going to, however, because playing games on this laptop is akin to taking a cheesegrater to my knees.

Buy the game here.

For want of a better post…

I want to post something substantial, but I can’t even remotely be arsed. Not even a little bit. I started something average about ten minutes ago and quickly decided it could bugger right off. So, here it is, today’s post:

Did you know that we, endoflevelboss.com, have a Facebook group? We’re so achingly cool and down with the kids in a non paedophilic way that we have a group on a popular social networking site. Would you like to see it?

Why not join? Spread the word? Get us some fucking visitors? Yeah?

Yeah.

Cheers, now you can be almost as cool as us.

Beginning of Sonic Unleashed.

Newzville!

Sorry, I know I’m both Youtubing and Sonicing your balls off at the moment, and nobody cares (not even me), but this is actually quite interestingish.

The full intro:

The animation on Robotnik is cocking wondeful. This is some sexy FMV.

Some shit from the first stage:

Looks like there’s an RPG style hub world thing, like in Sonic Adventure. I’m down with that, it means you can actually control what’s going on. The action stage still looks like you’re basically doing a reflex test and have absolutely piss all control of what’s happening. I hope I’m wrong, but secretly suspect I’m right.

Sonic was never very fast on the Mega Drive (when he was good). He was faster than Mario, but Mario was a fat middle aged man. I’m faster than a fat middle aged man! You could actually see what Sonic was doing on the Mega Drive, these days he runs past you and then you have to press B to make him do a trick, that’s about as far as it goes.

Maybe I’m just getting old.

NeoGaf showed me these videos, and I showed them to you.
